Ratings of Hotel InterContinental Budapest

The general ratings of Budapest luxury hotels is averaging at about 4.5 - 4.7, and Hotel InterContinental Budapest is also within this range. Hotel InterContinental Budapest is a relatively young hotel (built in 1989, renovated in 2000). Budapest InterContinental was voted as the 'best view' hotel: no wonder, the five-star hotel offers fascinating views over the River Danube, the Royal Palace on the Castle Hill, the Chain Bridge etc. just like Four Seasons Gresham Palace.

Location of Hotel InterContinental by the Chain Bridge in Budapest Hungary

Location of Hotel InterContinental Budapest

Hotel InterContinental Budapest is in a very good central location. Just like Four Seasons Gresham Palace it is located in the old city centre, on the right (Pest side) of the River Danube overlooking the panoramic Castle Hill and the Royal Palace with the Matthias Church, the Fisherman's Bastion as well as the nice riverbank houses of the Watertown district of Budapest. The Chain Bridge is right next to the hotel, so you can easily take a walk through the bridge to the Buda side, then take the historical funicular and you are up on the Buda hill - all in 10-15 minutes. The neo-gothic Hungarian Parliament is also just a few steps away, if you want to book a tour inside. Shopping? Vaci utca, a long pedestrian-only shopping street, is a few blocks behind the hotel, starting from Vorosmarty ter, the nearest yellow line metro station to the hotel (2 min walk). By the way, just keeping straight ahead on Vaci utca, you can take another pleasant walk to the Central Market Hall on Fovam ter to try some really tasty fruits, vegetables, salamis, etc. (25-35 min). Budapest Ferihegy Airport is about 13 miles/ 21.5 km from the hotel.

Restaurant Corso at Five star Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

Dining in Hotel InterContinental Budapest

The restaurant of the five star InterContinental Budapest is called Corso Restaurant (korzo or in a foreign spelling 'corso' means walking area in Hungarian, and it is named after the Danube riverbank (Dunakorzo), which has been The Favorite promenade for Budapesters for more than 150 years. If you sit in the restaurant you will see this frequented promenade (even better in summer on the terrace)- or, if you turn the other side, the theatre-like show kitchen. The menu of the Corso Restaurant is primarily Asian and Mediterranean seasoned with Hungarian accents, but there are always other specialities on the menu, such as Greek, Thai or other exotic dishes. The Corso Bar on the ground floor serves cakes, pastries, specialty coffees, cocktails (happy hours apply). By the way, children under the age of 6 get a free kids' menu (with an adult who pays for her/his own).

Family friendly

Baby-Sitting services are available. Further, onsite guest self-laundry facilities (washer/dryer), dry-cleaning, etc. Kids under the age of 6 get a free children's menu (with an adult who pays for her/his own). Margaret island is just a few minutes walk: the green spot of approx. 0.58 square miles/ 1 km2 offers great recreation if weather allows: there are huge parks, lovely fountains, statuettes, historical ruins, a water tower, a miniature zoo, an open-air theater and a race swimming pool (where serious swimmers train too). The four-star Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget (built in 1873) is also located here: if you want to sip a coffee after a Frisbee match or a nice walk. Or if you should decide to soak in the thermal water of the smallish spa baths on the island, see what the Danubius Health Spa resort can offer. You can hire bikes, carts and electric buggies to get you around on the island or have a race with the kids. Runners will also like Margaret Island very much: there is a relatively new rubberized running track. Other programs for families: take the yellow line and get off at the Zoo or at Szechenyi Spa Bath, or on Heroes' Square to take a stroll in the City Park. A walk over the Chain Bridge and a few minute historical ride on the vintage funicular railway will shoot you to the Royal Palace: galleries, museums, the Matthias Church and other historical buildings to see.

Pet friendly

Smaller sized pets are welcome in the hotel for an extra charge (no access to the Corso Restaurant and the Fitness Facilities with pets).

Reviews of Hotel InterContinental Budapest

Business Room at Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

A collection of subjective opinions of hotel guests (not of Luxury Hotels

Review Summary

To start with the bright side: InterContinental Budapest is clean, quiet, has good breakfast and offers great panoramic views of the Buda side (one guest warns that the Royal Palace and the Chain Bridge are 'only' lit until midnight. It sounds green and natural for me as someone born and raised in Hungary.) In addition, the hotel is very conveniently located for shopping, cultural tours, etc. Now, the problem areas. Some guests have mentioned that the hotel is lacking flavor: "The room itself, whilst of a good size was a little tired. The decor, fixtures and fittings were nothing special." As for room sizes: a handful of guests considered their rooms small, while others found their rooms (maybe suites?) spacious. A couple of reviewers wrote that they spotted 'ladies of the night' outside the building, walking up and down on the promenade (mind you, Kempinski got the same observation in this respect - albeit with upscale girls). Service is complimented by most of the reviewers, but occasional complaints indicate that ..., wait, the best is to quote: "service was a bit inconsistent - most of the staff was polite and delivering yet there was lack of competence" (see billing problems and placement in smoking rooms). Several guest found the indoor swimming pool small as well as the bathrooms. The gym appeared to be small for some and cool for others with great views. And coming back to the positive tone: the hotel is very close to the Margaret Island (Margitsziget) with huge green areas, an iny-tiny zoo (it is not The Official Zoo in Budapest just a teaser), and a rubberized running track: great for athletic and for family travellers! Tips from guests: check out the Club Floor package.

Bar and Lounge at Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"This is a good hotel if you are here for business, particularly if attending a conference, but I would not stay here socially. Everything was very efficient and the rooms were comfortable and well appointed for business purposes. However, this is not the place to choose if you are a tourist looking for something individual and relaxing. The food was excellent and the location and views wonderful. Liked: Location. Disliked: Blandness"

"Yes, the view (for an extra $58 or so a night) was fabulous. The prices (even for a conference rate) was otherwise outrageous. Over $32 for a room service continental breakfast that was tasteless and stale. Did not even honor the breakfast rates confirmed at booking. Bathroom so small as to be inconvenient. Location of hotel good. Front desk reluctant to help sometimes. Noisy repairs in adjoining room without any warning was another annoyance. Smoking in hall by elevator was annoying (we had requested but not received a nonsmoking room). Cost of internet access outrageously high as well (especially inview of the fallen dollar). Helpful hint-- a couple blocks away was a delicatessan which provided our reasonably priced breakfast instead, and made the stay more pleasant."

Ballroom at Five star Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"The hotel enjoys an excellent location on the shore of Danube next to the Chain Bridge and within walking distance of the city centre and shopping area. Used the hotel's Limousine service from and to the airport, they use Mercedes E class, 35 eur from and 25 eur to the airport, it is more convenient and comfortable albeit slightly more expensive than the taxis who stand at the airport. It is unfortunatelly one of the older InterContinentals and the public areas, elevators and pool area of the hotel are a bit 'tired'. The gym is quite small but with great view of the Chain Bridge. I had access to the Club Lounge which again featured a nice view and a good selection of refreshments throughout the day: breakfast buffet, daily snacks and beverages and evening horsd oeuvres with liquors etc. The selection was good yet the lounge tended to be overcrowded at breakfast and hors d oeuvre time. There are 2 computers to use in the Lounge and a free WiFi within the lounge, wired internet from the room is 25 eur per day. Service was a bit inconsistent - most of the staff was polite and delivering yet there was lack of competence at the hotel reservation office, minor lapses at check in etc. The suite was very spacious and, again, with panoramic 180-degree views of the Budapest Panorama. Did not sample the Corso restaurant apart having a drink on their terrace which was overexpensed in my view given it was not served or presented in any special manner nor the environment was any luxe excepting the views. Overally, this hotel is still one of the top ones in Budapest and enjoys excellent location and the Club Lounge is a good value, however if you are looking for true luxury and perfect service, the Gresham Palace is way better choice."

"I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in Sept, 2007 and really enjoyed it. The room was clean and you get lots of accessories, bathrobe, etc. For runners, like myself, you are about 1.5 kms from the island where you have a 5.5 km rubberized track with nice views. Fitness center is pretty cool too, with large windows facing Danube."

"Absolutely stunning location along the Danube with gorgeous views of the river, the Chain Bridge, and the castle. The rooms are pretty good, if a bit shabby, but very large, very comfortable, and very clean. The staff was fantastic, and the hotel is great, especially given its location. Stay here, and go across the street to the Four Seasons for drinks at night."

"Our 4-night stay got off to a bad start when we found that we had been allocated a smoking room, even though I am a Platinum Level Priority Club member, with my preferences supposedly logged on their database! Anyway, we were moved promptly the next morning and given a King river and castle view room (629). As others have said, the view from the river side of the Intercontinental must be the best in Budapest (see photo). We did think the bathroom was very small compared to the overall room size. The hotel was quiet and seemed well run. We didnt have breakfast in the hotel, so can't comment on that. Liked: View, large room. Disliked: Wrongly allocated a smoking room. Small bathroom."

"Was in Budapest for 2 nights. First night in Hilton, second at the Pest side in Intercontinental. Everything was great, the location is fantastic, the river view was well worht the extra money. We liked the Intercontinental better, had kind of more class then Hilton where it was more of a mess. We stayed in a club level room however which might have contributed. Overall a great experience and helpful staff except for that nowbady met us by the taxi to take our luggage, then they offered to take it when we were in the hotel, but at that time we had already grabbed it ourselves and could easily continue to our room."

Boardroom at Five star Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"We stayed at the Intercontinetal in Budapest for two nights in July 2007. The hotel is pretty good and has a great location. However, it has all the flaws of a four star rated as a five star that is : (i) relatively small rooms, (ii) free wireless internet absolutely nowhere in the hotel, and (iii) a gym a pool (barely 15m) that are just there to be able to right them in the facilities. Other annoying details: forget about turning on the TV if you are not German-speaking and hookers at the entrance of the hotel every night all night long. Do not get me wrong, this is still a good hotel but the Kempinsky is just around the corner and it is the same price!"

"I stayed one night last July in Intercontinental Budapest. This hotel probably has the best location in Budapest for easy access to the major tourist sights along Danube. The room that I had was not very spacious but had great views of the river, Chain Bridge and Buda; the view is particularly magical at night. Also, the breakfast buffet ( included in the room rate) was great with a wide variety of selections. The scene outside the hotel, however, is not very family-friendly after 10PM with many streetwalkers and "working girls" hanging around the area!"

"We liked this hotel from the minute we entered. The concierge was welcoming and gave us a great room --facing the Danube and facing the Castle. The concierge truly provided services such as making restaurant reservations, changing railroad tickets and helping with directions -- all with no attitude or resentment. The room was spacious and the view made us very happy."

Business Boardroom at Five star Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"This hotel has an amazing view if you get a room overlooking the river. I would suggest either booking a room with a view or asking for an upgrade upon arrival. It is worth the extra $. Located in the center of city. Rooms are large and very clean. Breakfast buffett was nice. Bakery around the corner was awesome !!! It is an easy walk to the main Royal Castle. I always tell others to stay here when they visit Budapest."

"A city with two sides...old and new. Good hotel, great location and service , as you would expect of this chain. ... Liked: clean, Disliked: old"

"Excellent hotel, with a perfect location. I have been there twice in the last 2 years. The rooms are tidy, and clean. The service is excellent. Furthermore, you are in the middle of everything....the castle distict a bridge and a funicular ride away whereas Parliament and St.Stephen less then 5 minutes away. Liked: friendly service, location and view, if statying at a river view room. Disliked: During my first stay, I stayed at a standard room - - these rooms have a very dull, depressing view"

Private Dining Room with River Panorama at Five star Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"Great hotel, great view, great breakfast. Pretty much everything was on a very high standard and there is nothing to complain. Maybe only the tax issue which is kind of annoying when all you pay is only after you see the price surcharged with x %. So, my suggestion is to never trust a price you see, but this seems to be a local behavoir and is not particular to the hotel, nevertheless ensure you always are ready to pay like 20% extra then mentioned in your booking."

"What a view - you HAVE to stay in a river view room as the view of the palace, river and bridge (both day and night) is wonderful. Hotel is very well located, within walking distance of many shops, bars, restaurants and sights. There is a tram stop just outside the door of the hotel for further exploration. Staff were great. As I stayed for quite some days I got a chance to try breakfast, lunch, dinner and a few drinks - all were superb. rooms were comfortable and quiet, staff were well informed and very helpful with any queries we had. a top class hotel."

"I live in Budapest but spent a couple of nights in the Intercontinental in May 2007. I am familiar with many of the city-center hotels, and would recommend quite a few of them. However, based upon my recent experience I will only recommend friends and family stay in the Intercontinental. Here's why: 1. The room was excellent. It was sparking clean with a nice selection of pillows. We were asked for our smoking preference (non) and given an appropriate room. The bed was very comfortable, as the evenings were very quiet with no outside noise. A bonus to the room was the fantastic view of the Chain Bridge and Castle District (I've lived here many years and never tire of enjoying it.) 2. Staff. Excellent around the horn. From the doorman, who greeted me every time I entered/exited, to the check-in staff that handled all my requests with precision and a smile (which is many times rare in Budapest!) By the way, each Thanksgiving I order a dinner from the hotel and the service provided always superb as well. Although I only number two items, I am a rather simple traveler. I will pay more for excellent service and clean/quiet and comfortable rooms. The Intercontinental delivered all three beautifully."

"Intercontinetal hotels are our favorite hotels and this one has been added on our list! Large rooms, conveniently located and breathtaking views of the palace, the river and the bridge! Very clean and we were upgraded. The only average point of the hotel is the breakfast which was not as much or as nice like the other Intercontinentals. But, if I went back to Hungary, I would definitely stay there!"

"The staff are extraordinary. From check in to departure nothing was too much trouble -- I tentatively asked if there was such a thing as "soya milk" widely available in Hungary; within about 15 minutes, a jug of it arrived in the room! When I asked where the pharmacy was, the concierge said he hoped it would still be open and checked with a few colleagues who said it would be; when I got back and reported that it was, he said "thank God" and really seemed to take it that personally! I asked for foam pillows and a housekeeper appeared to change the pillows and the duvet immediately. It is one of those rare, very well-run hotels where everything works first time. My room was very nice and the view over the Danube was fantastic. The hotel dates from the 80's (I think) so it is not cutting edge design but very comfortable and very solid. The rooms are quiet and well-furnished. The beds are excellent and the bedding is high quality. The exercise room is a bit small but fine for cardiovascular and has a few weight machines (although, oddly, not mats or abdominal balls) They were fixing the broadband access on the day I arrived but the new system was excellent and so fast that I could watch my Slingbox (connected to the UK) with full-screen vdeo. A real pleasure to stay here and absolutely recommended."

Restaurant Corso Showkitchen at Hotel InterContinental Budapest Hungary

"The hotel is centrally located, right on the riverbank and does offer good views of the former royal residence on the hilltop and the famous chain bridge...however these come with two small catches. Firstly in the room we were, the window didn't stretch from wall to wall or from floor to ceiling. So if you open and pull apart the curtains on both sides, you've got a fair bit of wall on either side that limits your view if you are not standing right up against the window itself. Second catch is that the city authorities (maybe because of environmental concerns or just budgeting issues; i.e. lack of cash) decide to turn off ALL the illumination of both the palace on the hilltop and the chain bridge EVERY single night after midnight, plunging any great view you may have paid for into utter darkness. While I accept that this is NOT the hotel's fault, or an issue they can do anything about, I think that it's important to know before you book a room here that you're not going to get much of a view between midnight and sunrise. That said, the hotel is of a high standard with a decent (albeit small) swimming pool which we used often (also with river views), a sauna and steam room. Rooms are bright and clean. The location is excellent and only a 3-5 minute walk away from one of the metro stations. I cannot comment on the breakfast as I didn't have any as it was (supposedly) not included in my room rate. One issue we DID have problems with was the billing. We booked and PAID for the ENTIRE stay IN FULL over the internet on a well known reputable hotel website which I had used before without any problems(not the intercontinental website as the rate quoted there did not include national and local taxes!!!). A succession of staff members told us different things during our stay. Tax was included; tax was would be charged extra; breakfast was NOT part of the room rate; breakfast WAS paid for; river views were to be surcharged; not to be surcharged....etc etc. At one point they said that they had no record of the room being paid for despite presenting them with a print out of the email confirmation voucher showing the prepayment. We provided 3 copies to 3 different staff members. Intially they claimed that they do not deal with internet hotel agents that take prepayment on their behalf. Then after much discussion and complaining they said that they did not know how to get the funds from the internet hotel agent we had prepaid through! This is a major international hotel listed on (and payable through) almost all major hotel websites (Expedia, Lastminute, Easyjet, Octopus) (I verified this myself!). Finally they wanted a credit card simply as a guarantee until this matter was sorted promising they'd call us IN ADVANCE if they charged it. Two days after departure they duly charged us without any call or email (despite verifying out contact details with them before we left). It took a week (2 calls, 4 emails) to have the money refunded to my card. All I can advise future travelers is NOT to leave any card number as a guarantee if you have already prepaid for your whole stay. Check carefully what is included in the rate (taxes, breakfast, river views, etc.) and get it in writing from the staff if possible. Get them to phone the booking agent you paid through if problems arise. Apart from the billing issues, the rest of the stay was fine."

"As you would expect for this price bracket the hotel is excellent. We were given a lovely room with views of the Chain Bridge over the Danube. A late check out was offerred at no cost."

"My wife and I stayed at this hotel on the recommendation of several tripadvisor reports. We were not disappointed,in fact we were very impressed. The views from the Danube riverview rooms were truly spectacular especially after dark. We stayed on the club floor which gives you access to the club lounge which is very comfortable. Guest on the club floor have a reasonable breakfast provided and coffee, tea, soft drinks and pastries available throughout the day. They also have free cocktails, wine, beer and a selection of warm food dishes available in the evening from 6pm until 8pm. Guests can help themselves to whatever they wish as it is self service. The staff were very friendly and efficient . The only problem we encountered during our stay was with the safe in our room.On our last day we could not open it!! After several attemps by the hotel security staff we were advised that the hotel would have to call out someone from the manufacturers of the safe to fix the problem. This took several hours for them to arrive so we could not enjoy our last day as we had to stay in the area near the hotel. If we are ever in Budapest again in the future we would not consider staying anywhere else."

"this hotel is very centraly located, you can upgrade your room to face the river and palace, which is well worth it. the rooms are clean and bright as are most the the intercontinental chain.

"Booked thru Travel Guide Inc. Lake Bluff, Illinois. They reserved a room on the Concierge - 9th floor with a view of the Danube[ an absolute must and prerequisite]. Across the river at night you can see the Buildings and Bridges lit up... a fantastic view bar none! 5+ Star hotel: Excellent food and wines (Hungarian); concierge level included breakfast, snack, evening cocktails hor'dourves; First class service and staff. Overall one of the best experiences one can have. Worth every Euro (not inexpensive)"

"Location very central, plenty to do safely in vicinity in evenings. Close to tourist places. Service impecable, everything you needed at breakfast"

"1st class hotel with an excellent service and quite near to the centre of the city. We were very satisfied with the service and the room service. Bravo!"

"Room was good size ,bathroom a little small, but very attentive, try and get a room @ the front as the views are spectacular. Would def recommend the intercontinental. Only bad point is the hookers out side the hotel."

"Excelent Location, clean and comfortable rooms, very rich breakfast, very good service, generally the hotel was very good. The only disadvantage for me and my wife was the shower that it was steady instead of flexible."

"Hotel was almost perfect. The only thing they could be more flexible is with the early check in, as we arrived at arround 9.00 am."

" Rooms - excellent:very good size, clean, high quality bed linens, towels, amenities, good airconditioning, bathroom shower excellent. Service - very good, rooms done quickly in the morning, consierge service very helpful & friendly, check in/out very easy Food - only ate breakfast - excellent, lots of choice Location - couldn't be better!"

" I loved the fact that the Budapest Intercontinental, like its sibling in Vienna, manages to be top of the line without being stuffy or pretentious. A Danube-facing room has arguably the best view in town. The hotel is situated close - even within walking distance - to many of Budapest's best restaurants and clubs, and to the famous shopping street Vaci utca. The staff was especially welcoming, friendly, and helpful - from the doorman to the concierge(s) to the folks at reception, etc. All in all, a great place to stay!"

"I stay 3 nights with them on last February. I got a free upgrade from them with a river view room. The view from it is really excellent! Their breakfast buffet is excellent as well in both quality and quantity. They even had a small corner of Japanese food for the Japanese. The view of the restaurant is also excellent, too. I think this is a hotel should be rated above 5-stars, at least in compare with the others in Budapest."

"This is a wonderful hotel in Budapest and excellent value for the money. Staff is helpful, hairdresser on the premises is first rate. The only problem is the restaurant of the hotel, the first night we ordered a Hungarian beef dish which was very tough. The food is uninspired, the hotel needs to upgrade the cuisine. Otherwise, it is a great place to stay."

"The Intercontinental Staff were welcoming and very helpful with a number of my needs. I spoke to staff at noon, in the evening and even at 5am in the morning and each time I found the staff to show me full attention and were very professional."

"The Intercontinental Budapest was a magnificent hotel. The rooms were large and very clean. The bathroom was spotless and even had a speaker to hear what was on the TV. The view on the riverside was breathtaking. The service was superb. From the checkin to the concierge to room service, everything was terrific. This is the place to stay in Budapest."

"I cannot think of anything that we disliked about this wonderful hotel. We booked a standard room for three nights and when we arrived we just questioned if they had a room with a view of the river. We were upgraded and hade a magnificient room on the tenth floor, overlooking the Chain Bridge, all of Buda, and far up the river. Eberything was perfect. The service was immediate. Rooms clean to perfection. We asked about a perfect restaurant for the evening and they recommended and booked for us, what we later found out was the best restaurant in Budapest - "Gundel's". They couldn't have been more gracious. I would recommend this hotel to anyone."
